Gastroenteritis (Stomach flu):

When you have diarrhea, vomiting and nausea people say that you are having stomach flu.

Gastroenteritis means that your stomach and intestines are inflamed. The cause may be bacterial or viral infection.

Symptoms of gastroenteritis (stomach-flu):

Diarrhea (watery) and vomiting are the main symptoms.

Stomach pain, cramping, fever, nausea and headache are associated with vomiting and diarrhea.

Because of diarrhea and vomiting, you can also become dehydrated. Watch for the signs of dehydration such as dry skin, dry mouth, light-headedness and really being thirsty.

If you have these symptoms, seek an immediate help.

What are the causes of Gastroenteritis:

  • Contacting with someone who has the virus

  • Contaminated food or water

  • Unwashed hands after going to the bathroom or changing a diaper

  • Eating a lot of acidic food like citrus fruit, and tomatoes.

  • Toxins that might be found in certain seafood.

Treatment options vary according to the causative agent and the symptoms

It may range from supportive care therapy (using IV fluids and electrolytes) to switching to antimicrobials as ornidazole (Astranida) or metronidazole as an adjunctive treatment with other medications.
